Grade 9 Erosion and Weathering

Today we looked at the Bill Nye film on Erosion.

1. We discovered that Wind, Water, Sand, Ice and Chemicals are all agents of Erosion.
2. Erosion includes a number earth flattening processes that counteracts Tectonic or Mountain Building Processes.
3. Water dissolves water soluble minerals like salt.
4. When water freezes it expands. If water gets into the cracks of rocks and freezes , the ice will  expandand weaken the rock.
5. Sand that is carried along by wind can act like a sand blaster. The blowing sand wears away solid rock.
6. Trees can cover soil, protecting the soil from being washed away.
7. Iron turning into rust and copper turning green is an example of chemical erosion.
8. Over time, rocks are reduced to sand.
9. In areas where there are steep hills and cliffs people can slow erosion by building concrete retaining walls and improve drainage.
10. Erosion is a slow process.
11. Lichen are plants that feed off the chemicals in rock.
12 A Hoodoo is a vertical column of rock that is formed as the surrounding rock is eroded away.

Tomorrow we will:
Complete a tectonic map of the world and learn the names and locations of 7 tectonic plates.
We will learn the following terms in order to produce an ecozone map of Canada.
- Boreal
- Taiga
- Shield
- Cordillera
- Plain
- Hudson
- Atlantic
- Pacific
- Arctic
- Northern
- Southern
- Mixedwood
