Grade 11 Update - Island Caretaker

So far this semester we :

1. Learned what the study of Geography means.
2. Learned the 5 themes of geography.
3. Considered the notion of a political region as an area that has a continuous territory where the people within the region are bound together by similar language, history, culture and values.
4. Learned how to describe where places are found using Latitude and Longitude.
5.Learned how to describe where places are found by describing where a place is in relation to other places.
6.Learned about Time Zones and how to tell the time in different Time Zones (both Canadian and global time zones)
7. Reviewed the major landmass regions of the world. (Continents)
8. Learned the major countries of Europe, South America and North America including Central America and the Caribbean.
9. Learned what Tourism refers to and the major types of tourism.
10. Watched a travel show on Jordan and learned how to describe the Latitude and Longitude of its capital City using an atlas Gazatteere.  We also described the location of Jordan in relation to other locations (Relative Location).
11. Learned that Jordan is a desert country and falls into global climatic high pressure region that is characterized by dry conditions. We also learned the world's global atmospheric circulation (Wind Patterns).
12. Learned how to make  multi-factor decisions and write a decision making report by investigating Theme Parks near Kitchener as a travel Destination.


Tuesday Feb. 22


In January 2009 Tourism Queensland embarked on a global search to find an Island Caretaker to explore the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia and report back to the world about their experiences. 


Today we will:

Apply the Decision Making and Writing Process to select the best representative from a final list of 16 to take on the role of the Island Caretaker.  (Summative Assessment)

Tomorrow


We will watch a travel film on Ascension Island and investigate the geologic reasons for its existence.
