Grade 9 Erosion and Weathering

Today we looked at the Bill Nye film on Erosion.

1. We discovered that Wind, Water, Sand, Ice and Chemicals are all agents of Erosion.
2. Erosion includes a number earth flattening processes that counteracts Tectonic or Mountain Building Processes.
3. Water dissolves water soluble minerals like salt.
4. When water freezes it expands. If water gets into the cracks of rocks and freezes , the ice will  expandand weaken the rock.
5. Sand that is carried along by wind can act like a sand blaster. The blowing sand wears away solid rock.
6. Trees can cover soil, protecting the soil from being washed away.
7. Iron turning into rust and copper turning green is an example of chemical erosion.
8. Over time, rocks are reduced to sand.
9. In areas where there are steep hills and cliffs people can slow erosion by building concrete retaining walls and improve drainage.
10. Erosion is a slow process.
11. Lichen are plants that feed off the chemicals in rock.
12 A Hoodoo is a vertical column of rock that is formed as the surrounding rock is eroded away.

Tomorrow we will:
Complete a tectonic map of the world and learn the names and locations of 7 tectonic plates.
We will learn the following terms in order to produce an ecozone map of Canada.
- Boreal
- Taiga
- Shield
- Cordillera
- Plain
- Hudson
- Atlantic
- Pacific
- Arctic
- Northern
- Southern
- Mixedwood

Grade 11 Update - Island Caretaker

So far this semester we :

1. Learned what the study of Geography means.
2. Learned the 5 themes of geography.
3. Considered the notion of a political region as an area that has a continuous territory where the people within the region are bound together by similar language, history, culture and values.
4. Learned how to describe where places are found using Latitude and Longitude.
5.Learned how to describe where places are found by describing where a place is in relation to other places.
6.Learned about Time Zones and how to tell the time in different Time Zones (both Canadian and global time zones)
7. Reviewed the major landmass regions of the world. (Continents)
8. Learned the major countries of Europe, South America and North America including Central America and the Caribbean.
9. Learned what Tourism refers to and the major types of tourism.
10. Watched a travel show on Jordan and learned how to describe the Latitude and Longitude of its capital City using an atlas Gazatteere.  We also described the location of Jordan in relation to other locations (Relative Location).
11. Learned that Jordan is a desert country and falls into global climatic high pressure region that is characterized by dry conditions. We also learned the world's global atmospheric circulation (Wind Patterns).
12. Learned how to make  multi-factor decisions and write a decision making report by investigating Theme Parks near Kitchener as a travel Destination.

Tuesday Feb. 22

In January 2009 Tourism Queensland embarked on a global search to find an Island Caretaker to explore the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia and report back to the world about their experiences.

Today we will:

Apply the Decision Making and Writing Process to select the best representative from a final list of 16 to take on the role of the Island Caretaker.  (Summative Assessment)

Tomorrow

We will watch a travel film on Ascension Island and investigate the geologic reasons for its existence.

Monday Feb 14. Grade 9 Regions, Glaciation as an Earth Flattening Force

Grade 9

Yesterday we reviewed the concept of a region and revisited the three types of regions studied this year.

A region is an area that is defined by unique characteristics.

Land Mass regions - Continents - (7)
Political Regions - Countries and Provinces
Natural Regions - Landform Regions of Canada.

Canadian Landform Regions.
Western Cordillera
Interior Plains
Canadian Shield
Great Lakes st. Lawrence Lowlands
Appalachians.

Arctic Canada
- Arctic Lowlands
- Hudson Bay Lowlands
- Arctic Canadian Shield

We also looked at the two main processes that shape the face off the earth.

Tectonic Processes
Mountain Building Processes ( earthquakes and Volcanoes)

and

Gradational Processes
Erosional Forces
Earth Flattening Processes

We looked at the influence of the most significant Erosional Force, Glaciation.

10,000 years ago Most of Canada was covered by glacial ice up to 2km thick. This ice was so erosive that it gouged out  depressions that make the current Great Lakes.

There are 2 types of glaciers:

Continental Glaciers similar to Antarctica and Greenland

Alpine or Mountain Glaciers similar to the ones found in the Western Cordillera.

To supplement this material students watched the film The Rise and Fall of the Great Lakes.

Grade 9 Regions Arcview Grade 11 Tourism and Travel

Grade 9
Two days ago we watched the Film Physical Geography of Canada with interruptions in order to develop a set of notes.. Yesterday we watched the film without interruptions to see the film in its entirety as well as produced a hand drawn map of Canada's Landform regions.

Today and Tomorrow we will  complete a political Map of Canada and a Landform map of Canada using a computer program called ARC MAP.

Tomorrow we will also complete a test on Canada's political regions.

GRADE 11

Yesterday we completed text questions.

Grade 9 Regions - Grade 11 The Best Job in the World

Grade 9 - Political Regions

Region: an area with unique characteristics.

Yesterday we:
1. reviewed the continents and European political regions with a small quiz. For students who were absent or not present last week when we learned this material, we will retest this material again at a later date.
2. Looked at the political regions within Canada by producing a hand drawn political map of Canada.

the six components that must be included on all maps include:
TITLE
BORDER OR FRAME
SCALE
NORTH ARROW
LEGEND OR LABELS
NAME

The map we worked on included Canada's 10 provinces, 3 territories and the capital cities associated  with these political regions, including Ottawa, Canada's capital.

You will be tested on this material on Friday.

Today we will watch and develop notes on the film Physical Geography of Canada which looks at Canada's Landform Regions.

Western Cordillera
Interior Plains
Great Lakes St. Lawrence Lowlands
Appalachians
Arctic Canada
           ARCTIC SUB REGIONS
         Innuitians
         Arctic Canadian Shield
         Hudson Bay Lowlands
         Arctic Lowlands

Tomorrow we will map these regions.

Grade 11 - The Best Job in the World

In January 2009 Tourism Queensland embarked on a global search to find an Island Caretaker to explore the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia and report back to the world about their experiences.
On offer was a salary of AUD $150,000 for a six month position with live in luxury accommodation on Hamilton Island and the opportunity to explore all that the region has to offer.

Over 34,000 would-be caretakers from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe and everywhere in between uploaded a 60-second video showing their creativity and skills. From celebrities, writers, tour guides, environmentalists, students, to mums, dads and retirees everyone was vying for the Best Job in the World.
A shortlist of 50 applicants from 22 countries were narrowed down to a final 16, 15 whom were chosen by Tourism Queensland, and the 16th a ’wild card’ applicant Claire Wang from Taiwan chosen by popular vote.

In class we reviewed the final 16 submissions and undertook  a process to select the best submission.

A link to the video submissions is found below.

Anjaan - India Ben - France Ben - UK Cali - USA
Clare - Taiwan Clarke - New Zealand Erik - Canada George - Ireland
Greg - Singapore Hailey - Australia James - Australia Juweon - Korea
Magali - Netherlands Mieko - Japan Mirjam - Germany Yi - China

Your culminating project this year is to develop a country BLOG, similar to the "Best Job in the World" blog that profiles Hamilton Island off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Your task is to construct a BLOG  that Profiles a country of your choice throughout the semester. At the start of each week you will be given a topic that you will be required to discuss or write about in your BLOG that relates to your country of choice.

Today you will set up your BLOG, select a country and write in your BLOG why you selected the country you did. This submission is reflective in nature. Take some inspiration from the Video presentations above.

Today's Skill development:  Building a personal WebSite  _  a BLOG.

Perhaps my goals are lofty, but my pledge to you is that I will do my best to help you learn and be successful this year.

There are times this semester that you will be introduced to skills or concepts that are new. Please don't get frustrated or discouraged. Be patient with yourself as I will be patient with you. The only thing that I ask of you is that you use the talents, skills and gifts that God has given you to the best of your ability.

Have a great semester, talk to me if you have any concerns and give this course a great effort.
